KALAMAZOO, MI - A 20-year-old man charged with murder for an April 10 shooting in Kalamazoo said in court that he didn't do it.
Deonte Burdine appeared via video for his arraignment Thursday, April 13 in Kalamazoo County District Court.
As Judge Christopher T. Haenicke began to read aloud the charge of an open count of murder, Burdine interrupted and said "I did not, sir, I did not."
Burdine was arrested Tuesday, April 11 in connection to a shooting in the 900 block of North Church Street that left 22-year-old Bernard Kye dead and a 40-year-old woman hospitalized. The woman is in stable condition and is expected to survive, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said Thursday.
In addition to the murder charge, Burdine was arraigned on six other criminal counts, including assault with intent to murder and five firearm felonies. Haenicke denied him bond.
During a probable cause hearing, a KDPS detective said police had obtained footage from a residential video surveillance system in the area that showed Burdine pull out a gun.
According to the detective, Burdine admitted to bringing his handgun to the area.
Police say the investigation remains open and are asking that witnesses come forward if they have any information. KDPS said in a news release that there may be video that was recorded during the incident that could aid in the investigation.
